From the Staff of the Bluewater Bay Tennis Center

Welcome New Members

The following players have joined our member family:  Matthew and Mark Higgins. We hope that you will have many pleasant memories at our Club and that you make many new friends in this great sport.

2004 Winter Junior Development

The junior development will resume the week of January 12th.  The cycle will once again last for eight weeks and conclude on March 5th.  For more information or to sign your child up, call Doug or come in the pro shop for the complete group schedule.

Cayo Grande Future Champs

Once again, we had great participation from our juniors in the last local sanctioned tournament for the year.  There were a total of 13 kids from Bluewater Bay who took home trophies from this event.  All the winners are listed in the Events section of the web site.  Thanks again to all who participated and especially to Cayo Grande Apartment Homes for being such an awesome sponsor.  Please read the next article for an update for next year’s event as well as other tournament additions for next year.

2004 Tournament Circuits

Beginning next year, the area tennis professionals are combining forces to offer three circuits of tournaments for this region.  The first circuit consists of the junior Cayo Grande tournaments hosted both at Bluewater Bay as well as the Fort Walton Beach Tennis Center.  Participants in these tournaments will accrue points to qualify for a year-end master’s event to be held in Navarre.  The second circuit, also for juniors, will consist of all the junior sanctioned tournaments held between Pensacola and Panama City, with the top eight in each age division being invited to the year end master’s event.  The last circuit is for adults and is comprised of seven tournaments in the district, with the last tournament an invitational tournament comprised of the top point leaders in each division.  Points are accumulated at each event, so the more tournaments you play in, the more opportunity you have to earn points to qualify for the year end Master’s event.  So what’s the big deal?  How about at least $ 3,000 in prize money!  Look for the information sheet at the tennis center.

Children’s Advocacy Center Holiday Benefit

Here we grow again.  This year’s CAC event was even better than last year’s, with well over 100 players in the draw.  A good time was had by all, and even more importantly, more money was raised for a very worthwhile cause.  Thanks go out to Bill Readdy and Carol Jolley who played very vital roles in the organization and especially to Babs Gardecki who spearheaded the entire event.  Jolly good show Babs!  We would also like to thank the NWFTA Ladies’ League who supplied the majority of the prizes for the silent auction as well as everyone who donated to the cause.  We are already looking forward to next year.

2004 Bluewater Bay Designated

Mark your calendars for January 30th – February 1st for the 2004 Bluewater Bay Adult Designated tournament.  This year’s event promises to be one of the premier tennis events in the Emerald Coast.  Not only will the tournament feature play in age divisions from 35 to 85, but new for 2004 will be the offering of prize money in the Men’s Open division events.  $1,500 will be awarded in the Men’s Singles and Doubles divisions.  This tournament will also add a buffet style dinner for all entrants on Saturday evening.  Look for entry forms to be posted soon.  Grab your racquet and get ready to get involved in the fun!

Player to Watch

The player to watch for this round is Andrea Kovacs.  Andrea has only competed in three tournaments, but has managed to take home the hardware in each and every one.  In the Cayo Grande event, she was able to avenge her only singles loss in USTA play by defeating a seasoned competitor, Kali DeBerry in the semis, and go on to take the title in straight sets in the finals.  Andrea’s natural athletic ability, determination, and hard work will continue to pave the way for her improvement and continued success.
